“Like many Californians, I was encouraged to hear Governor Schwarzenegger put aside the partisan rancor and divisiveness of the past year to focus on the problems that Californians care about: repairing and modernizing our outdated infrastructure; fully funding public education; providing affordable prescription drugs for seniors; and providing a much needed boost in the minimum wage for our most vulnerable working families.
My hope is that this speech represents a genuine commitment to the needs of all
Californians, and not just election year campaign promises. Californians need to
remember the broken promises of the past:
Last year’s under funding of public schools by $2 billion, and proposed changes to minimum funding protections for schools.
Previous vetoes to minimum wage increase legislation, and similar proposals to allow drug importation from Canada.
Balancing the state budget through borrowing and cuts to state services that target our most vulnerable seniors, disabled, children, and working families---instead of ensuring the wealthiest Californians pay their fair share.
Recently, Assemblyman Nakanishi (R-Lodi) said it took him 3 years to learn the legislative process in Sacramento. Apparently, Schwarzenegger is suffering from the same learning curve. Californians can’t afford to wait any longer for effective leadership.
Our $40 million special election sent a clear message to the Governor, Assemblyman Nakanishi, and to all members of the California Legislature---work together and serve the people—not the political consultants and special interests. No more excuses, no more name calling, and no more learning curve.
The time has come for them to act in our interests.
We’ll be watching.”
